Blog #3 Digital Citizenship

What does the research say about this?
Digital Citizenship is the way to correctly act when online and using/doing anything in the digital world. Digital Citizenship Utah lists ten different topics to address when it comes to understanding digital citizenship: media literacy, digital footprint, security, ethics, digital literacy, harmful content, digital safety, etiquette, cyber bullying, and sexting. Common Sense Education talks about the importance of teaching digital citizenship in our classrooms. "Being a good digital citizen is more than knowing your way around the web. It's about connecting and collaborating in ways you didn't even know were possible" (commonsense.org).

How can this be effectively integrated into your teaching?
Digital Citizenship can be effectively integrated into my teaching by reminding students about how to act depending on what we are using in the curriculum. It is important that my students understand how to be safe and act when we use a blog versus when they are doing research.

How will this help your students?
This will help my students because they will understand how to act when they are using affinity spaces in their own time. It will also help them as they play around on the various social media sites. I hope this will help my students understand what is OK to post versus what is not safe to post, how to act, and how to keep themselves safe from strangers.

What are your goals with regard to this topic?
My goal with digital citizenship is to help myself understand what is important to teach and effective ways to teach it to my students. I also hope to keep my students safe when using media.

How does this shape your vision for empowered learning for your students?
This shapes my vision for empowered learning for my students because if they feel more comfortable and in charge while using social media then they will feel like they are in control of what we are learning and doing in class. Giving them the tools to succeed will help them feel like they are important parts of their own education.
